First of all, just so you know, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Almost ALL college freshmen feel this at some point while they are away. There are thousands of other college freshmen at other schools across the country, that are right now feeling the same way you do. So it's not just you feeling this way.

Take familiar music or DVD's to fall asleep to if you start to feel ill, they will distract you from thinking too much about how you feel and what you are thinking. The funnier the DVD the better as it will help you feel more positive

Sometimes these thoughts and feeling pass on their own and sometimes getting help is very useful. San Francisco is a place many young people come when they are getting started in adult life on their own. The costs for living expenses are so high that many young women find themselves in roommate situations, or if they can afford it, have small studio apartments. Some people take the opportunity to try living with their significant other.

We still want to get Christmas gifts for them however, no matter how far from home they might be. Unfortunately young adults in the military often have little to no personal space to store extra non-necessary items. Since these young adults are probably new to the military, they most likely live in a small barracks which is a lot like living in a small dorm room.

These poor nuns witnessed me growing up there in that coalmining town. They had to deal with my fiesty self more than once. I still remember Sister Mary patiently watching me rally the other "brownie" troops and walking out in protest due to the fact of having to pay the ten cent dues at Brownie meetings. Sister Mary negotiated with we children and vowed to lower the dues if we would just come back in and finish our cookies and koolaid.

For most teenagers their first year includes a new area, along with a new room and roommate. College comes with a learning environment that is fast paced and a lot less personal than high school. This is sometimes an extreme shock to a teenager and they may soon find themselves struggling to keep up with and understand all the material they need to learn. Tests and quizzes are longer and require knowledge of much more material than High School, causing students' stress levels to rise even more.

Accept that you won't know every detail of your student's life. Your student may never have lived away from you before and going to college is an exciting, important step in their growth. The values you have instilled, along with their new campus values, will help your student make good choices.
